According to volunteer Pradip Pandey, who has been assisting victims and their families, it took more than two days to identify Laxman’s family after the protests, as he lay unconscious in the ICU. His wife had left him, and his young daughter’s whereabouts remain unknown, leaving only cousins and friends to collect his body for postmortem. More than 72 people were killed and thousands were injured during the demonstrations.

His wife adds in frustration, “If money like that of former prime ministers was found in our homes, we’d be jailed, but they still walk free. After all this bloodshed, what will be the outcome?”
