KATHMANDU: Chairman of the CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal said his party was ready to support any candidate in order to address the national agenda- peace and constitution.

However, he urged the prime ministerial candidates from the UCPN-Maoist and the Nepali Congress to withdraw the candidacy and lay the new foundation of national consensus.

“If the debacle of majority government repeats, there will be a zilch gain, a misfortune, making ten months a waste”, he commented.

He expressed such views while speaking at a programme on national consensus for peace and constitution organized by the CPN-UML party wing National Youth Association in the capital today.

He also urged the Nepali Congress to make sacrifice and the Maoists to implement the past agreements. He was of the opinion that present electoral procedure should be quashed even by amending the regulations so as to seek consensus.

Meanwhile, Vice-President of the Nepali Congress Prakash Man Singh ruled out Khanal’s views on changing the regulations after the initiation of a game.

Consensus among parties is possible only after intra-party consensus; he said, accusing the Maoists of boasting of being a big party.

Maoist Vice-Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha expressed his view that the demand of the Madhesi front- whole Madhesh single province- could not be accepted. He blamed the rival political parties that they were spreading false propaganda on Maoists demanding it be a civic party while it has already led the government coming a long way since the 12-point understanding.

MJF Chairman Upendra Yadav said the present need was to guarantee the constitution and forge grounds to address the Madhesi front’s demands by settling down the residues of the peace process for national consensus.

General Secretary of the CPN-ML CP Mainali said the person who is dishonest on democracy, peace and constitution could not be accepted as prime minister. To suit this, the Maoists cannot be trusted, he said.

The programme was presided over by NYA chairman Mahesh Basnet.
