DHANGADHI: Incessant downpour for the last few days has put this far-western district of Kailali under water. According to Nepal Red Cross Society Kailali, dozens of villages in the district have been inundated.

Nepal Red Cross Society Kailali district President Uttam Joshi said over 300 families have been displaced due to floods. However, some 100 families returned after water level receded.

A team of Red Cross Society and security personnel visited the flood-hit area today. Joshi informed that floods had displaced around 162 families at Ramshikharjhala VDC. Flood has washed away three houses in the same VDC, said Joshi.

Displaced from Khaireni, Simthari, Banabas areas of Ramshikarjhala are sheltering in local Sitakunda Higher Secondary School.

Joshi further informed that swollen Kandra River displaced some 100 families from Ghumnebhakal area of Pahalmanpur VDC. Raging Kandra has put Kandra Bridge on Mahendra Highway at risk. Floods have also damaged 20 houses at Sankarpur and Betahaniya areas in Masuriya VDC.

Houses of Pancharam Chaudhari and Udayaraj Bhatta in Betahaniya have also been swept away.

Kailali Red Cross has distributed beaten rice and noodles to those who returned to their homes safely.

According to Red Cross, water level has been increasing in rivers by the day due to continuous rainfall. Sirens connected in Kusumghat of Bhajani, Ambari and Lalbhoji in Khelad have sounded alarm bell, informed the Red Cross. “If rainfall continues in the hills, most parts of the district are likely to be inundated,” said Joshi.
