NEW DELHI: India has proposed expansion of the membership of the United Nations Security Council from the existing 15 to 25 by adding six permanent and four non-permanent members.
A proposal in this regard was tabled by India along with Brazil, Germany, and Japan (together known as G-4) in the United Nations General Assembly in July 2005, Minister of External Affairs SM Krishna today informed the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the parliament.
The G-4 proposal has been supported by
many UN member states, according to a written
reply by Krishna to the
Lok Sabha.
”The President of France and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in a Joint Summit Declaration issued on 27 March 2008, declared their support for the
candidacies of India, Brazil, Japan and Germany for permanent membership, as well as permanent representation of Africa on the Security Council,”
Krishna added in the reply.
