Far-west left high and dry for 9th day

MAHENDRANAGAR: Lives in Kanchhanpur and Kailali district have been adversely affected on the ninth day of the bandh enforced by the locals demanding for an undivided Far-West.

The bandh enforcers demonstrated in Mahendranagar on Saturday as well. Similarly, members of Far Western Awareness Forum have been continued relay fasting on the sixth consecutive day today.

Other political parties besides UCPN-Maoist organised a massive demonstration in Mahendranagar. Hundreds of people participated in the demonstrated organised by Joint Struggle Committee. Speakers at the corner meet demanded to keep the Far-West intact.

Vehicles remained off the roads in the district the whole day today. Even motorcycles could not ply as there was huge presence of demonstrators in Mahendranagar and in the adjoining areas. Market places and education institutions also remained closed.

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded in Mahendranagar due to the bandh. Police escorted few vehicles and took the stranded passengers to their destinations on Friday night.

Meanwhile, bandh enforcers torched three motorcycles at Kulpate area of Dipayal Doti for defying bandh. Police arrested Sitaram Nepali, Dhirendra Shah, Bishal Baral, Suresh Nepali, Man Magar, Labraj Bhattarai, Amit Bohara, Sailendra Shah and Ishwor Kathayat in connection with the incident.

Locals organised huge rally in Dhangadi and on Saturday morning. Speaking at the corner meet, NC leader Prakash Bam warned of intensifying the protest if their demands remained unheard. CPN-UML leader Yagyaraj Dhungana urged the Tharu people as the Far-West can be developed only if it is kept intact.
