Continued bandh in Tarai hits life no end

BIRGUNJ: Normal life across Tarai was affected today as well due to the indefinite bandh called by Broader Madhesi Front, which has been demanding a single pradesh in Madhes.

Front sympathisers clashed with police in several parts of the region and continued vandalising property as police briefly detained protesters.

In Parsa district headquarters Birgunj, police and bandh enforcers clashed after protesters attempted to vandalise a tanker ferrying petroleum products, at Ghantaghar Chowk. APF Assistant Sub-Inspector Bablu Singh was injured after being hit by a stone. ASI Singh, who received a cut on the head, is receiving treatment at Narayani Sub-regional Hospital. Pradip Yadav of the Front said activists were injured when police charged baton. In Parasi, police briefly detained three activists, who were blocking road near Powerhouse Chowk. Agitators staged a protest rally in Bara headquarters Kalaiya.

United Democratic Madhesi Front and Broader Madhesi Front activists took out separate rallies in Nawalparasi saying that a constitution without federalism would not be acceptable to them. In Biratnagar, bandh enforces tried to set a shop on fire yesterday night. However, they fled the scene when police arrived. Broader Madhesi Front cadres vandalised a motorbike in Biratnagar’s Bhattimod today for defying the strike.

Life was also hit hard in Dhanusha, Siraha, Saptari, Rautaht, Sunsari and Jhapa. Vehicular movement was disrupted and marketplaces, factories, and schools remained shut.
