KATHMANDU: The power of a satisfying lunch hour should never be underestimated. It can not only improve your overall job satisfaction and work performance, but a little rest and relaxation will even help you become a better co-worker. Having fun excursions to talk about will make you more approachable and help you bond with fellow co-workers.
Shaking up your routine can also be an amazing source of energy and inspiration. If you are stuck in the middle of a big project, you may unknowingly adopt self-imposed limits and lose your creative edge. Taking a break can give you fresh eyes. Those lightning bolt of ideas often strikes when you are busy doing something non-work related. So step away from your desk and take some time out. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Play sportsGet outside. Play volleyball, tennis, or even ping pong. Throw a frisbee. Playing sports is an ideal way to bond with co-workers. “You may not have much in common with them, but when you’re playing a sport, it doesn’t matter. You’ll be laughing and smiling before you know it,” says Namrata Sonami, teacher’s assistant at Kathmandu College of Management.
Have a picnicDo a bit of prep work researching nearby parks and packing up the perfect picnic lunch. Make a pact that you will not talk about work, whine about your boss, or gossip about the co-worker with questionable fashion sense. “Just make sure it is relaxing and not taxing in any way,” adds Sonami. Come noon time, hunker under a tree with your couscous salad and strawberries and watch the glorious day become livelier.
Go for a walk
“If you’re looking for some solo time, going for a walk will lift your spirits and clear your head,” suggests Sonami. Poke around a nearby neighbourhood and soak in the sights. Noticing all the different people around you can help put things in perspective. Your workplace is just a small drop in the bucket. Even though it may feel all-consuming at times, there is so much more out there.
Eat something tasty
Treat yourself to something you know you will truly love whether it is hot dog or sushi. After a long morning in
your cube, a change of scenery can make all the difference. “Lunch time is basically all about food, but you can make it more enjoyable by meeting up with friends at your favourite eatery,” says Kaushal Raj Sapkota, A-level business teacher at Modern Indian School.
WorkoutMaking time for exercise can be very difficult, especially if you are juggling responsibilities at home and work. Many people find working out during lunch to be the perfect solution. Go for a run or a swim. Take a yoga class. Ride your bike. Even 20 minutes of exercise can make a big difference in your day. The important thing is to do an exercise that is convenient and enjoyable so you stick with it.
Listen to musicDo you still listen to the same music you listened to 10 years ago? You are missing out! Do not let yourself get stuck in a rut. Use your lunch hour to explore new music. Sapkota suggests trading play lists with friends for this.
