From casuals to red carpet: All about inspiration


KATHMANDU: For a designer anything and everything can be a source of inspiration and this is evident in the various sequences of The Himalayan Times TGIF Nepal Fashion Week 2009 which will start from September 7. The set of designs for day two (September 8) is a mixture of both creative as well as casual styles.
While some designers have been inspired by natural beauty like the sky during twilight, some have been influenced by mysterious characters like mermaids and pirates. Then again the free spirit and elegance of womanhood is celebrated by some.
The Himalayan Times TGIF Nepal Fashion Week 2009 is being organised by IEC in association with Chivas Regal. The main sponsor of the event is Löwenbräu and it is supported by Linen Club. The creative partner for the event is Echoad and VLCC is the beauty partner. The official host of the event is Hotel Yak and Yeti while the official carrier is Nepal Airlines and Avenues Television is the official news partner.
Tickets for the event are priced at Rs 1720 including dinner and a complimentary drink.

THEME: THE BIRTH OF WOMANISM
Designers: Pramila Lama Tamang, Nirosha Lama, Sumi Gajmer and Sarala Shahu (Kathmandu)
A salute to nature's beautiful creation -woman-this collection includes flowing gowns in colours like white, green, cream, blue and off white. Asymmetrical cuts with details like smocking and flowers can be seen in these garments, some of which are off shoulder.

THEME: CRAZY GIRLS ON THE RAMP
Designers: Surita Shrestha and Sumita Maharjan (Kathmandu)
The creations of this designer duo are for all teenage party animals. Party wear, for the fun loving teenagers, of cool colours and fabrics with cut works, frills and drapes are included in this collection.

THEME: SUMMER DE- LITE
Designers: Sanjay Limboo Phombo, Sharmila Parajuli, Kalyani Gurung and Bina Thapa (Kathmandu)
Cool and eco-friendly are the two words that describe the garments of this collection the best. The designers have come up with knee length to flowing and semi-fit dresses in cool colours like ice-blue, green, lemon green and purple. The fabrics for these garments, which have works like frills, shell tucks and fringes are handloom products.

THEME: RED CARPET
Designers: Lina Pun, Bidhya Gurung, Laxmi Gurung and Amrit Gurung (Pokhara)
As the name suggests the inspiration behind this collection is the glitz and glamour of the world of cinema. Flowing gowns that are the favourites of most celebrities for red carpet can be seen here in colours like blue and green.

THEME: GO TO MARKET WITH BERMUDA
Designers: Jyoti Gurung, Usha Gurung, Kiran Maya Gurung and Kalpana Gurung (Pokhara)
Representing the cool and casual style of Bermudas this group of designers have used wool, georgette and chiffon in colours like blue, white and cream. Very much wearable in day-to-day life unlike others the garments of this collection are inclined towards a casual look.

THEME: LEHENGA
Designers: Dil Kumari Gurung, Subash Gurung, Laxmi Shrestha, and Shoba Shrestha (Pokhara)
Another collection of bridal wear the range includes choli, sharara and ghangra in brocade, net and silk. Made in A-line and flowing cuts the colours used are brown, white, black, blue and grey.

THEME: CAPTAIN HOOK- PIRATES CALLING
Designers: Dolker Gurung, Subina Lama, Anjana Rai and Kabita Nepal (Kathmandu)
Pirates have always been fascinating characters with their elusive presence in the ocean and their rather different dressing style. Focusing on the legendary character Captain Hook, designers of this group have created a line of trousers that depict the pirate style.
The trousers in green, black, white and grey have detail works like gathers, shirr and rivets. The inclusion of different styles of pockets adds up to the whole ragged look.

THEME: STAIR CASE ASPIRATIONS
Designers: Pratyusha Baral, Abeda Banu, Kamala Chhantyal and Sweta Karmacharya (Kathmandu)
The ascending and descending silhouettes of these gowns of different lengths show how the structure of a staircase has inspired these designers. They have chosen soft and flowing fabrics like chiffon, georgette and satin in yellow, green, purple and white for their collection. The use of bows, tucks, flares and drapes can also be seen in these gowns.

THEME: FREE WILLY
Designers: Raj Kumari Sharma, Anna Singh, Krishna Shah and Binju Shrestha (Kathmandu)
Meant for the free spirited women of 21st century this collection includes trousers, jackets and waist coats in a variety of fabrics from Nepawear. Flowery colours like purple, blue and red are the signature colours of these designs.

THEME: MERMAID IN A MELODY
Designers: Usha Kiran Kunwar, Isha Baidar, Mangal Laxmi Shrestha and Dibyashwori Sainju (Kathmandu)
Taking inspiration from the beauties of the ocean - mermaids-the attires in this collection are made up of flowing fabrics like satin, crepe and crusted chiffon. In various tones of blue straps and drapes are regular features in most designs. Blots and artificial flowers have been used to add variety to these gowns.

THEME: SKY LIGHT TWILIGHT
Designers: Sushila Shrestha, Ranjana Shrestha, Ratna Kaji Kapali and Maha Laxmi Surkheti (Kathmandu)
The short dresses in this collection are also in different shades of blue but this time the blue represents the beautiful sky. Presented in asymmetrical cuts with embroidered yokes and hand paintings telling the stories of birds, clouds and rainfall, which enhances the beauty of sky during twilight.
