KATHMANDU: The week-long Martyrs’ celebrations began today with tributes to the four martyrs who had sacrificed their life to usher in democracy in the country. Martyrs’ Day falls on January 30.
Different programmes were organised today across the country to mark the first day.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City paid tributes to martyr Shukra Raj Shastri at Teku-Pachali, where he was hanged to death. KMC plans to pay tributes to martyr Dharma Bhakta in Siphal at 8:30 am on January 27, martyrs Ganga Lal and Dasharath Chand in Bishnumati-Shovabhagawati at 8:30 am on January 29, and to all martyrs at Lainchaur-based Shahid Memorial Park at 9:00 am on January 30. They had sacrificed their life in the fight against the Rana regime. Shastri was killed on January 24, Dharmabhaka on January 27 and Gangalal and Dasharath Chand on January 29.
Meanwhile, Park Construction Working Execution Committee, Gokarna, organised a programme at the construction site. Inaugurating the function, CA member Mahantha Thakur , president of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party, said the peace process should be logically concluded to fulfil martyrs’ dreams.
