Woman killed on charge of witchcraft in Parsa

Chaudhary was accused of being witch and a kangaroo court of locals unilaterally decided to expel her from the village.

BIRGUNJ: A 45-year-old woman was beaten to death by her neighbours on charge of practicing witchcraft in Supauli, Parsa on Thursday midnight.

A resident of Sadhitole, Supauli VDC-9, Parvati Chaudhary was accused of being witch and a kangaroo court of locals unilaterally decided to expel her from the village.

Following the decision, the victim and her husband Jagan were planning to leave the village on Friday morning.

But locals fatally beat her at midnight, according to DSP Basudev Khatiwada.

The assaulters overpowered the couple and thrashed the woman, accusing her of casting evil spell on her neighbour Jagadish Chaudhary’s daughter.

She died on the spot.

The assualters were preparing to cremate the victim stealthily.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team, led by Inspector Shyam Krishna KC, reached the incident site at 1 pm this afternoon.

Police held three women -- Pashupati Devi Chaudhary, Sima Kumari Chaudhary and Renu Kumari Chaudhary -- in connection with the murder.

Police said they are looking for other suspects who are at large.

On August 6, a widow was beaten up and forced to eat human excrement by her neighbours in Bishrampur VDC of Parsa district on charge of witchcraft.

The Civil Code provisions an imprisonment for three months to two years or a penalty of Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 or both for one who abuses women on charge of witchcraft.
