KATHMANDU: Gas came out instead of water while installing the dip boring meant for smooth water supply to the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA).

The gas substances emanated when the pipe was dipped some 180 feet below the ground for the purpose of pumping up water, informed general manager at the TIA, Ratish Chandra Lal Suman.

He further informed the gas bubbled when the dip boring was almost installed in the northern-eastern part of the airport.

It would not cause any effect as the gas is not combustive, he said while quoting technicians of the Department of Geology and Mines.

The strange gas emerged out from the six-inch pipe dipped nearby the radar consisted 80 per cent gas and 20 per cent water, Suman said.

The emission has not triggered any problem in the operation of flight services in the airport, he added.

The emission might have occurred with the decreasing level of underground water sources in the Kathmandu Valley, according to the Department.
