KATHMANDU: West Indies stunned two-time champions India by four wickets, while England, New Zealand and South Africa registered their first victory in the ICC U-19 World Cup today.
In a Group ‘C’ match at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville, Ronsford Beaton took three wickets, while Jerome Jones and Kyle Mayers had two scalps each as West Indies restricted India to 166-8.
Smit Patel top scored for India with 51 runs. The Windies, in reply, made 167-6 in 47.1 overs riding on composed 52 from Anthony Alleyne.
England – beaten by Australia on Saturday, defeated Ireland by seven wickets in a Group ‘A’ match at the Endeavour Park 1. Ireland were 109 all out in 42.2 overs before England finished at 113-3 in 36.2 overs.
In Group ‘D’ South Africa crushed Bangladesh by 133 runs at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane. Bangladesh had stunned Sri Lanka in their opening match on Saturday but that was not to happen against the Proteas.
Riding on Quinton de Kock’s 95, South Africa amassed 294-8 and bundled out Bangladesh for 161 in 34.3 overs. In Group ‘B’, New Zealand defeated Scotland by 39 runs at the John Blanck Oval in Sunshine Coast.
