KATHMANDU: Lt Gen (retd) Krishna Narayan Singh Thapa climbed atop the leaderboard with 106 points after the third event of the Ncell League here at the Gokarna Golf Club on Thursday. Thapa scored 37 points to climb two spots up to the top replacing Gaurab Bikram Shah, who dropped to second with 103 points after scoring 33. Purna Man Shakya is third at 102 points. Aditi Ghimire signed in the best card of 43 points to win the third event, while Tendi Sherpa finished second with 39 points. PK Shrestha is fourth at 101 and Gopal Chitrakar fifth with 99 points. The players with highest points after eight events will be declared winner in nett and gross categories.

Tandon, Gupta elected

NEPALGUNJ: An electoral general assembly of the South Asian Weightlifting Association (SAWA) elected Ratan Tandon as vice-president and Partha Sarathi Sen Gupta as general secretary here on Thursday. Tandon is the president of Nepal Weightlifting Association (NWA) and Gupta the NWA general secretary. Tandon and Gupta were among the nine-member executive committee elected unopposed under president Birendra Prasad Baisya of India. The assembly was held on the inaugural day of the first South Asian Weightlifting Championships. The competition starts on Friday with eight gold medals up for grabs.

U-16 National Cricket

KATHMANDU: The Under-16 National Cricket Tournament kicks off with two matches at two separate venues – Tribhuvan University Stadium and Pulchowk Engineering College grounds – on Friday. Region-III (Kathmandu) will take on Region-VI (Baitadi) at TU Stadium while Region-IV (Bhairahawa) will meet Region-I (Biratnagar) at the Pulchowk grounds. Region-II (Birgunj), Region-III, Region-VI and Region-VII (Janakpur) are drawn in Group ‘A’ while Region-IV, Region-V (Nepalgunj), Region-I and Region-VIII (Pokhara) are pitted in Group ‘B’. Winners of each of the two Groups will play for the championship at the TU Stadium on March 29.

LACM, Apex triumph

LALITPUR: Little Angels College of Management (LACM) ‘B’ and Apex College recorded wins in football during the sixth LA Cup Inter-college Sports Tournament on Thursday. LACM ‘B’ edged Whitehouse 2-1 on goals from Kailash Raut and Apurva Ranabhat. Arun Limbu scored for Whitehouse. Apex beat LACM ‘A’ 2-1 on goals from Kiran Shrestha and Sanjeev Tiwari. Mohit Pradhan replied for LACM ‘A’. In another match, Caspian crushed Metro College 5-2. Rajendra Bohara struck a hat-trick and Niraj Karki scored a brace for Caspian while Tashi Tamang and Ujjwal Roka scored for Metro.

Joshi, Chand in final

KATHMANDU: Nawaraj Joshi of SBI Bank and Janga Bahadur Chand of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) entered the men’s singles final of the PESDAN Badminton Championships on Thursday. Joshi saw off defending champion Sudip Budhathoki of NTV 21-11, 21-9 and Chand dispatched Purna Bahadur Bajracharya of Nepal Bank Ltd 21-15, 21-15 in semi-finals. In the women’s singles semi-finals, defending champion Anju Adhikari of Nepal Electricity Authority rallied for a 19-21, 21-16, 21-13 win over Guddy Karki and Shraddha Manandhar of Nepal Telecom defeated Sabina Maskey Pradhan 21-16, 21-14.
