KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University (TU) on Friday has extended the tenure of Free Students’ Union (FSU) members for an indefinite period. The tenure of FSU ends on March 20.
Prof Dr Madhav Sharma, Vice Chancellor of TU said that the tenure was extended today as TU could not announce the new date of election till date due to differences among the student unions regarding the election system. He said that the tenure has been extended until TU reaches a new decision on FSU.
“Student unions affiliated to political parties could not come to consensus on the type of election system for the FSU election and therefore we could not announce the date for the election,” he said.
As per the TU Act, FSU election should be held on February 26.
Meanwhile, student unions have accused TU of hatching a conspiracy to fulfill rival student unions’ demands.
Nain Singh Mahar, vice president of Nepal Students Union, affiliated to Nepali Congress today said that the tenure of the FSU was extended as part of the conspiracy of CPN-UML-affiliated All Nepal National Free Students Union and UCPN-Maoist-affiliated All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R).
Similarly, Himal Sharma, president of ANNISU-R alleged that extension of the FSU tenure was a conspiracy to delay the FSU election.
