KATHMANDU: Police arrested a suspected bomber in possession of an improvised explosive device and a cache of explosives from Gongabu in the Captial on Saturday.
The arrestee has been identified as Maite Limbu (44) of Railway Sukumbasi Line, Dharan, currently residing in rented room at Chhetrapati in Kathmandu.
The arrest and recovery of explosives comes in the wake of home ministry's special direction to law enforcement agencies to stay on high alert with special focus on the post-May 28 situation, as the tenure of Constituent Assembly is expiring on May 28.
A three-member team of security personnel deployed by Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj had rounded Limbu, based on information that he was on the way to New Bus Park 'to plant a pipe bomb he was carrying in a bag' at around 3 am.
With the arrest, DSP Deepak Thapa, MPC in-charge, claimed that the plot of criminal elements to set off the bomb and cause casualties has been averted.
Rai reportedly was earning his livelohood as a rickshaw puller in Thamel and Chhetrapati area for the past 11 years.
According to DSP Thapa, a cache of gunpowder, nails, marbles, iron pipes and other materials used to preverare IEDs was recovered from Rai’s possession.
