KOKILA KC / THT

KATHMANDU: The fee row between the Tribhuvan University and the student unions entered a new stage as the latter on Monday announced the first phase of protest programmes against the decision of the TU to hike the fees of Masters and Bachelors levels.

The students have formed a management and mobilisation committee under the coordination of Himal Sharma, president of Free Student Union (FSU) of TU Campus, Kirtipur. Raj Kumar Rai, FSU president of Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus and Manoj Baidya, FSU president of Pashupati Multiple Campus have been made members through meetings held at the office of All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) in Bagbazar on Sunday and Monday.

The press statement issued by student unions in the press conference today states that they had decided to go for a stir as their demands were not addressed by the TU. The statement has accused the decision of the TU of depriving poor students of education. They have also alleged that the TU is not taking their demands seriously.

The first phase of protest programmes began from today with the press conference and will last till November 27. The protest programmes range from sit-in protests to mass meetings. On the final day of the first phase of protest programmes on November 27, the students have decided to organise a sit-in protest at the vice chancellor’s office.

Although being an oldest university of the nation, it is crawling to survive and trying hard to maintain its subsistence. Over times, the TU management has been trying to modify the long time followed fee structure but failed to impose with immediate effect. However, it’s the need of time that TU should bring its new fee structure in order to compete with other newly established universities in the country. Also, the curriculum taught in the university is old enough and that does not help make the products competent in competitive world. In fact, the fee row is politicized and students are preached to stand against it, it’s not the good sign for the sustainability of TU. The university has been used much for political platform rather than learning platform. Yes, the corruption in TU administration is high and is mounting every year. It would have been much better if students had called for protests against growing corruption in TU, take initiative to improve its academic calendar and force the administration to provide quality education. The move of the students should be towards improvising the university and help make a number one university in the country. Should the education temple be utilized for educational purposes in future and immediately withdraw hands from the called protest. Sanjay Shrestha, Balaju, Kathmandu
