NAWALPARASI: Half-a-dozen persons were injured, one critically, today as Tharu activists clashed with Brahmin-Chhetri, Dasnami, Thakuri Dalit society members.
The incident took place at Danda as Tharu activists, enforcing a bandh in the area, tried to stop members of the society en route to a mass meet organised in Butwal.
Of the injured, the condition of Tiger BC of Pragatinagar is said to be critical. Inspector Umesh Lamsal said police fired seven rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Bandh enforcers had stopped about a dozen buses used by the Brahmin, Chhetri, Dasnami community while they were en route to Butwal to participate in a mass meet. They vandalised three motorcycle, a bus and a truck used by the society members, in Danda. “We had no plans to stop them. But they were defying the bandh,” said Sita Ram Tharu, Nawalparasi vice-chairman of Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha.
The passengers later chased away the bandh enforcers from Danda. Police from Kawasoti brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, central secretary of Tharu Kalyankarini Sabhaj, called on all not to refrain from inciting hatred between various communities. Meanwhile, market places, industries and education institutions remain shut due to the bandh.
