ACHHAM: A village in Achham is reported to have six dozen cases of HIV/AIDS.
According to District HIV/AIDS Coordination Committee, 72 cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported in Payal VDC of the district. “The district headquarters Mangalsen is just behind Payal VDC with 55 cases,” said committee coordinator Mohan Khadka. Payal and Mangalsen have the highest population in the district. The committee said other VDCs like Babla, Binayak, Lungra, Siundi, Marku, Chalsa, Siddheshwor, Ghughurkot were also HIV/AIDS-prone villages. Of the total 75 VDCs in the district, HIV cases have been found in 70 VDCs. However, Khaptad, Devisthan, Thanti, Rishidaha and Kuskot villages have not reported a single case so far, said Khadka.
As per the data of the committee, only 57,406 people from the district have got their blood tested for HIV. And out of that, 1,326 people, which make up 0.51 per cent of the total population of the district, were tested positive in mid-June. A total of 511 victims are now taking antiretroviral drugs regularly in the district.
Of the total number of HIV/AIDS victims, more than 800 are females and over 90 are children.
According to the data with the committee, so far 74 have lost their lives to the diseases. In view of the disease slowly turning into an epidemic, the committee is mulling over holding awareness campaigns.
