GOLBAZAR: Farmers in Siraha district have been compelled to visit the Indian markets to purchase potato seeds following its shortage in the Nepali markets.
This year, Nepali markets have witnessed the shortage of potato seeds due to a fall in its production last year. Besides, cultivation of potatoes on commercial scale is going down in the country.
Potato seeds imported from India are available in the markets of Golbazaar, Lahan, Siraha, Mirchaiya and Sukhipur. But farmers have to pay double the price than in the Indian market for one kilogramme of potato seeds, it is learnt.
Following this, farmers here have no alternative to going to Indian markets to purchase potato seeds.
One farmer Matuk Paswan of Itatar Kamalpur complained that the local traders import potato seeds from India and sell at a double price than the purchase rate.
