KATHMANDU: The FIBA-Asia Congress in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday has elected Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) President Lama Tendi Sherpa as its Central Board Member. According to the NeBA release, Sherpa secured seven votes in the elections participated in by seven countries. Afghanistan did not attend the congress of the Asian basketball ruling body. This is the first time a representative of Nepal was elected in the FIBA-Asia Central Board.

Shiva Ram off to India

KATHMANDU: Nepal No 1 professional golfer Shiva Ram Shrestha on Sunday left for India to play the PGTI Players Championship events. The tournaments are slated for May 29 to June 1 at Chandigarh Golf Club in Chandigarh and June 5-8 at the Golden Greens Golf & Country Club in Gurgaon. Shiva Ram qualified for the 2012 PGTI season as the second best foreigner in the Q-School. Another Nepali pro Toran Bikram Shahi — a PGTI regular for more than a decade — has already left for the tournaments.

‘C’ Division Qualifier

KATHMANDU: Jhamsikhel Youth Club, Dakshinkali Sports Development Committee and Shanti Goreto Youth Club entered the Group ‘B’ quarter-finals of the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull ‘C’ Division League Qualifier here on Sunday. Bal Bahadur Dingdong scored the solitary goal in the 40th minute as Jhamsikhel defeated BBC Banepa 1-0. Likewise, Dakshinkali beat Imadole Youth Club 3-0. Roshan Shrestha struck twice, while Mahasagar Shrestha netted one for Dakshinkali. Also, Shanti Goreto registered a 2-0 victory over Janamarga Youth Club 2-0 on goals from Bijay Karki and Bhuwan Shrestha.

Sumitra, Sarita in final

KATHMANDU: Sumitra Sulu and Sarita Shrestha entered the women’s 68kg kumite semi-finals at the 18th International High School Karate and Kickboxing Championships here on Sunday. Likewise, Binita Maharjan and Kesang Lama of Nepal, India’s Vaishnavi and Misera Akhtar of Pakistan advanced to the 25kg semis. Also, Karuna Shrestha and Apsara Moktan of Nepal, Yogita Telang of India and Mehar Afroz of Bangladesh made it to the last four in 30kg section. In kickboxing, Nepali trio of Sarada Raut, Karma Tamang and Anisha Maharjan entered the women’s 40kg semis along with Bangladesh’s Panna Akhtar. In 50kg, Renu Bista, Rasmita Shrestha, Sangita Tamang and Shashikala Rai, all from Nepal, advanced to the semi-finals. In men’s section, Laxman Basnet, Bishnu Nepali, Prakash Kumar Bista and Chiran Kumar Tamang made it to the last four. The finals are slated for Monday at the National Table Tennis Training Centre, Lainchaur.
