SArabia constructive role urged

THT Online

KATHMANDU: Climate change policy activists in Nepal have urged the international community to put pressure on the Gulf country of Saudi Arabia to play a constructive role in the current climate change negotiations.

The activists, who assembled in front of the UN House at Pulchowk, Lalitpur on Wednesday, chanted slogans like ‘Save our Himalayas,’ Save water, can’t drink oil’ and ‘Promote cleaner technology and stop pollution’.

The delegates from around the world are gathering in Barcelona now, a run-up to the Copenhagen meeting on climate change slated for this December, with negotiations intensely being debated to strike a deal on climate change.

This was one of the fifteen peaceful protests taking place in different countries aimed at putting pressure on the oil-rich country to be loyal to the new agreement on climate change, said the protest organisers.

Saudi Arabia is widely believed to be one of the most active countries in the negotiations and it has been reported that it is continuously lobbying against the deal.

There have been calls to Saudi Arabia from within the Arab world to work for the poor and needy people by sacrificing some of its national interests regarding climate change, which has been one of the urgent global concerns in recent times.
