SHANGHAI: Olga Belyaeva scored three goals as Russia led 6-1 after two periods and held on for an 8-7 win over Italy to win the bronze medal in women's water polo at the world aquatic championships.
Italy outscored the Russians 6-2 in the third period Friday before the teams played to a scoreless fourth.
China played Greece in the gold medal match later Friday.
Earlier Friday, Australia beat the two-time defending champion United States 10-5 for fifth place and the Netherlands defeated Canada 8-7 to take seventh place in the 16-team competition.
