WELLINGTON: New Zealand's economy grew a faster-than-expected 0.8 percent in the three months ended September, its strongest quarterly growth in nearly two years.

Statistics New Zealand said Thursday that the country's staging of the Rugby World Cup boosted retailing and the hotel and restaurant trades. Manufacturing also improved.

Economists had forecast quarter-on-quarter growth of 0.6 percent.

The economy expanded 1.3 percent in the year ended September.
