The President during the meeting inquired from the PM about the latest political developments including the progress on formation of national consensus government and peace and statute drafting processes.
In response the PM briefed that the parties including CPN-UML are trying their best to form a consensus government. He further said that his resignation was to open the door for a consensus government and said there was no other option to it, sources confirmed.
The President has given a deadline of August 21 to form a consensus government after Khanal resigned from the PM’s post. However the parties are yet to reach an agreement to forge a consensus government with two days remaining for the deadline.
After several rounds of meetings UCPN-Maoist and Nepali Congress (NC) have agreed to form a consensus government on a rotational basis but it is yet to be decided which party should lead the government first. CPN-UML, however, is not making a claim for the PM’s post this time.
