KATHMANDU: One person died and at least a dozen locals have sustained injuries as police opened fire to disperse a mob, which went on a rampage to protest an incident of a road accident at Garuda of Rautahat District on Thursday.

Mod Prasad Jaiswal, 30, of Laxmipur VDC of the district lost his life in the clash, which ensued after locals resorted to protest alleging that police have not taken action against a tractor driver, whose vehicle had hit one Ram Shrestha Raut to death last week.

The protesters who went out of control even set the police beat at Garuda on fire after chasing away police personnel.

Police Inspector Suman Lamichhane along with three other police personnel have also been injured in the scuffle.

Police fired 15 rounds of tear gas to take situation into control.

If we believe what locals told, police had fired six rounds in air.
