KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Police Commissioner AIG Kuber Singh Rana today inaugurated a newly built custody house on the premises of Metropolitan Police Circle in Kalimati.
The police unit, which was marred by the suicide of a woman detainee and torture of another captive to death, is expected to recover its lost public trust with the inauguration of the new custody house.
On March 13, Bhawani Tamang (42) of Dhading, facing fraud charge, had committed suicide by hanging herself in the toilet of the old custody room with her sari tied to an iron rod of the ventilation. Sanu Sunar (40) of Lalitpur, had died in custody due to excessive torture meted out to him last year.
Rana expressed belief that the new infrastructure would help the law enforcement unit manage inmates and the crime investigation process. “People raise question about police efficiency mainly due to poor infrastructure and lack of foolproof security system in the custody room,” he said.
