OKHALDHUNGA: It might take the wind out of your sails but the hard truth is a woman of Patle VDC-8, Okhaldhunga has been living in a cave for 64 years, and continuing.
“Though I have a small plot of land, I have been living here for long as I could not build a house of my own,” Kalimaya said. “I had stepped into the cave as a bride when I was 13 and has been living here since,” she added.
“I had great expectations from my children, but they have left me here and gone away,” lamented Kalimaya, mother of two sons and four daughters.
“She lost her only plot of land to a wealthy person in the village, from whom she had taken a loan to raise her children but could not repay the loan”, said Ngima Sherpa, a local.
“She has lost much of her hearing and hardly recognises anyone,” said Elisa Gadal, a neighbour, adding, “Villagers provide food items and other necessary household items to her.”
However, much to her relief, Patle VDC has been providing her with the old age pension in the cave itself.
