BHAKTAPUR: The top leaders of UCPN-Maoist--Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Vice Chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattrai—on Saturday said their party is ready to step down from the government if the Constituent Assembly elections will be held by May.
Dahal said the Maoist party is committed to hold the CA polls by mid-Jestha (May 29), and asked the major opposition parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to come to the fore to forge consensus by keeping election at the focal point.
Addressing the inaugural of fifth district convention of his party’s Bhaktapur district committee in front of the five-storey Nyatapole Temple at Taumadhi, Dahal asked the opposition parties to propose a non-partisan individual for the leadership of election government.
“If the opposition parties did not come to forge an agreement despite the Maoist exhibiting this much flexibility,” he said, “Later it should not be said that the Maoists changed their words.”
Speaking at the same function, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai echoed with Dahal’s voice and urged the NC and CPN-UML to give up the politics of forbiddance and reach an agreement to hold CA elections by May 29.

Dahal further warned of resorting to Janavidroha (people’s revolt). “If the opposition did not come for an agreement, there is no alternative to taking up Janavidroha. That will make the final decision.”
Dr. Bhattarai sarcastically compared the current state of NC and CPN-UML with a fish out of water, and said, “Your perturbation is due to not getting (to be in) the government. Holding Constituent Assembly elections by mid-Jestha is the treatment. That’s why give up the politics of forbiddance and come for an agreement.”
He said the incumbent government was ready for any sacrifice if the CA polls would be held by May 29.
Dahal claimed that there is wave of people’s support to the Maoist party across the country.
Claiming that there was an overwhelming support to the Maoists in Humla, Taplejung, Dailekh and Sindhuli, Dahal said, “Seeing people’s support for us, the status quoist and reactionary forces are perplexed. We saw that as an instance in Dailekh.”
He further charged that the NC and CPN-UML demonstrated their fascist character through cowardliness in Dailekh.
Another Vice Chairman of the party and Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier today, the cadres of NC and CPN-UML had staged a demonstration against Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai and obstructed the six-lane road at Sallaghari in a bid to block him from going to Bhaktapur to take part in the programme.
The VIPs took another route—from Pepsi Cola to Purano Thimi, Nikosera and Byasi—to make it to Taumadhi.
Security was beefed up in the ancient city of Bhaktapur for the leaders’ arrival and the Maoist programme.
The local businesses were forced to shut in Taumadhi and security personnel were deployed in the houses and restaurants near the programme venue.
