ILLAM: Police today arrested a man for thrashing a woman charging her with witchcraft.
Ratan Tamang and his family had yesterday night beaten up Bishnu Maya Tamang accusing her of casting black magic spells on his wife and making his wife sick. Bishnu Maya (52), a resident of Ilam Municipality, had filed an FIR against Ratan, her neighbour, saying she was thrashed by Ratan and his family when she was fetching water from a local tap.
According to Bal Bahadur Shrestha, another neighbour of the victim, Ratan’s wife has been sick for the past six months and Ratan and his family thrashed Bishnu Maya accusing her of making Ratan’s wife sick through her witchery.
Bishnu Maya’s family said Ratan’s family did not even spare Bishnu Maya’s son Bal Bahadur and daughter-in-law Rekha and beat them up as well. “Ratan was threatening my wife when I reached home at 10:30 pm yesterday. He assaulted me and my wife also,” said Bal Bahadur.
Police said investigation was under way.
Hundreds of women, particularly belonging to so-called low-caste, suffer abuse at the hands of ‘witch hunters’ and others every year in the country.
