KATHMANDU: The chairpersons of various thematic committees of the Constituent Assembly today said top leaders of the political parties overshadowed other CA members while drafting the constitution.

The chiefs of thematic committees, formed to prepare the preliminary draft and concept papers on various issues of the constitution, said they worked hard to prepare the reports, but all in vain.

“The leaders were not serious in drafting the constitution although all the thematic committees submitted reports on time. Top leaders remained engaged in power struggle,” said Ramesh Rijal, chairperson of the Committee for Determining the Structure of the Legislature,

Govinda Chaudhari, the chairperson of the Committee for Determining the Structure of Constitutional Bodies, said they were in high spirits the first time they entered the Constituent Assembly Hall. “We had high hopes that we will deliver the constitution as per the aspirations of the people. If CA is dissolved, it would be the saddest moment in my life,” said Chaudhari.

Nawodita Chaudhari, chairperson of the Committee for Determining the Basis for Cultural and Social Solidarity, said top leaders forced all CA members behind. “Aspirations of the people suffered as a result.”

“The CA was a historic achievement. However, due to the major political parties’ shortsightedness and lust for power, CA is on the brink of dissolution,” said Lal Babu Pandit, chairperson of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Minorities and Marginalised.

In fact, the CA is dissolved and the blame can be laid directly at the feet of the obstructionist NC and cpn-UML, headed by Koirala, Nepal and Deuba. They freely admit they have used the tactic of dividing their opposition by fanning the flames of prejudice so that the lesser castes and poorer regions of the country fight each other for individual rights. It is painful to see that these cynical men manipulate the poor people on the behalf of the stakeholders of the status-quo. One can only imagine what they feel when they see poor urchins burning trash in the streets to stay warm in the winter time. Did they ever pull from the thick wad of 1000 rupee notes in their pocket to buy a hotel room for a night and a hot meal for these downtrodden? No, it never entered their mind, they are numb. parbati lama, Boston, USA
