KHOTANG: Cardamom production has drastically fallen in Khotang district this year owing to long drought like situation and various diseases.

According to Cardamom Producers' Association, Khotang, cardamom production has gone down by 80 percent.

Phedi, Patheka, Khartamba, Baspani, Baksila, Sungdel, Rakhangdel, Wakachola, Kharmi, Japala, Bajhechayandanda, Nirmalidanda, Ratancha, Temma, Nerpa, Khidima and Sawakatahare VDCs mainly saw poor cardamom harvest, said Association's Chairman Bir Bahadur Tamang.

The production also nosedived in Derpadanda, Maktima, Dandagau, Chisapani, Chitapokhari, Sapteshworpokhari, Chipring and Baplu VDCs. Farmers are a worried lot due to low production as cardamom is a staple crop here, Tamang said.

The drought like situation started from the Nepali month of Baishak and continued till the fruit bearing time and at the same time diseases hit the crop, he said.

Cardamom produced here is exported to several parts in the country as well as India. According to the District Agriculture Office, cardamom is produced in at least 700 hectare in the district.
