KAPILVASTU: Paramananda Jha, who has been a defunct vice-president rendered by a Supreme Court ruling, has revealed that he was pressed by party kingpins to take the oath in Hindi.
He made the remark today revealing that he took his oath of office and secrecy in Hindi language when big wigs of major political parties told him not to do the same in Nepali.
Jha became the nation's first ever defunct vice president after dishonouring the apex court's verdict of August 23 that he retake his oath of office in Nepali.
"Those leaders at first told me not to take the oath in Nepali language and later put me in moral crisis," Jha said, adding, "The leaders who used to call me frequently have left doing the same since August 30."
He, however, said he would make public the names of those leaders, parties and their 'grand design' at an opportune time, later. He was speaking at a felicitation programme organised today by assistant whip of Madesi Janaadhikar Forum (Nepal)'s parliamentary party, Abhishekpratap Shah.
"Come what may I will not obey the Supreme Court order," a defiant Jha retorted.
The defunct vice-president also demanded that Hindi language be declared a national language of the country.
"I took oath in Hindi as it is the contact language of Tarai," Jha said. His perks and allowances were cut down by the government after the apex court’s ruling.
In a bid to do away with the oath-taking row and the tension gripping the vice presidential position, the government, under pressure from three Madhes-based parties, had earlier registered a proposal for constitution amendment but the proposal was not passed.
The felicitation programme was attended by lawmakers Abhishekpratap Shah, Ahammad Khan and Shantidevi Harijan -- all leaders of MJF Nepal (Upendra Yadav faction).
In addition, some 100 Indians, including Indian Youth Congress’ central member Madhusa, were present.

I dont know why all are hovering and shouting for this oath process?Taking oath in nepali or hindi doesnt matter. If hindi wasnt spoken in our country, then it would be the matter of great talk. Hey people common, you watch hindi movies a lot, do you need interpreter there? I think not, then why are you making so issue? Language doesnt evaluate leaders. In whatever the language they take oath, they dont do anything for people and we are the last sufferers so why are we crying for this? Brabim Karki, syuchatar

who wants Vice president or Presidents ??? I am looking for His Majesty The King Gyanendra to rule the country not a bunch of the slaves of Hindustan. And Mr. Ramchandra, may be you don't know how many languages are spoken in Nepal, but one thing is for sure, Hindi has not been listed as one of the national language of Nepal. So, making an oath in this language is not even the oath, its just the indication of Hindustan making a big move in Nepal. 100% citizen beman and still Hindustan mahan ?? Ramchandra, are you politician or hindustani ??? MAHARJAN bimal, Kathmandu, Nepal

This is to all of us..THE NEPALESE..we are multilingual and multicultural..what binds us is the common and strong feeling of being a Nepali. How can we argue over such a thing as not following the national language? and if we start making all the dialects as official where's the common thing between us? Mr Ramchandra, we are first Nepalese. I hope you do understand the value of united we stand. Annie Shrestha, Ktm

Nepali is not a mother tongue of 65-70 % of Nepalese. How could one claim? Time has come to realize, all other languages in Nepal should be considered as a national language. Yes, I agree with that Nepali and English might be official language. Regarding vp....He did a good job, leaving VP post. He proved that he is a man of principle. As usual, in Nepal a person can do everything to stick to the chair. He is a hero in tarai. anil, Birgunj

I really pity on those people who do not give value to mother tongues, otherwise the elect VP would not have to face the consequence that he is facing now. Despite the opportunity provided, he went on challenging the Supreme Court. Now it’s clear by his statement that his taking oath in Hindi was a serious mistake, and Hindi is not an official language of Nepal although spoken customized in terai belt. Was he a fool that he could not use his own conscience and followed what his political peers ordered? Couldn’t he distinguish between right and wrong? Truly, Nepal is a multi-lingual country, but it’s also true that the Hindi spoken differs from place to place; it’s been customized for their convenience. It’s been clearly stated that oath can either be taken in national language or in mother tongue. Had he given importance to his mother tongue, he would be enjoying the portfolio of VP. But it’s really unfortunate to him in this condition because of his own reason. Really, his own mother tongue has cursed him for his act. And, how absurd it is to say ‘khas’ language rather than ‘Nepali’ language, because he has served this country for almost 30 years in judiciary service. Did he use Hindi in while he was in service? Now he admits that taking oath in Hindi was a forceful act and a mistake, then why discuss in this matter. Also, Supreme Court is all in all and we should all abide by its orders, and VP is not above SC and interim constitution. So he must abide by SC’s directives if the SC once again allows him for taking fresh oath in NEPALI, not in KHAS. He already has missed one chance, I think he should be given second chance and his position should be reinstated. The country can go on without VP for next 5 months because we people of Nepal do not need a person like him who disrespects his own mother tongue. And, Nepal does not need person who has no dignity. Why does he want to resume the post at eleventh hour? Is something fishy going on? Ranju , Kathmandu, Nepal

Mr. Sanjay Shrestha should understand that Nepal is a multi-lingual country and Hindi is also a language spoken in Nepal. The Vice President has done great service to Madhesi and oppressed lingual groups of Nepal by defying the orders of Khas dominating Supreme Court and Government of Nepal. Nowhere in our interim constitution gives rights to the Supreme Court or this immoral government to make such an order to inactivate the post of the Vice-President. You are talking about constitution but can you tell us which article of present constitution says that VP must take oath in Khas language else his post will be deactivated? Is there any article in the constitution, which allows any government body to deactivate the post of VP? It could happen because Nepal is ruled by Khas chauvinists but not by any democratic norms. Khas chauvinists in Nepal must realize the need of treating all languages of Nepal in equal-footing else they will bear consequences sooner or later. Ramchandra, Ktm.

Mr. Jha, you state that you were unfairly forced to take oath in Hindi. But there is no mention of your stand on this issue. Do you support oath in Hindi? If you don't, you should have retaken the oath in Nepali after the court gave you the opportunity to do so. On the other hand if you support the it, you should resign in protest and stop blaming others for coercing. You can't have both ways. Bhim K, KTM

Mr. Vice-prez, thanks for realizing your own mistake that it was not your intention to take oath in Hindi, you were forced too doo this act by your own peers. Now you should have realized how much it did cost to you. You even didn’t heed the SC’s directives and remained a stubborn person. Perhaps, by now you have realized the importance of mother language and Nepali language. Stop being a puppet and heed the SC’s order as a responsible citizen of Nepal. And you can resume you position by re-taking oath in Nepali language. From now on, never underestimate our national language and mother tongues. Hope you have learnt a good lesson. The views expressed on readers-speak column has an essence of the envoys who are related to … embassy. Has any Nepalese disagreed with the fact that Nepal is not a multi-lingual country? Of course not, every body is well known with this fact and respects the mother tongues spoken in any parts of the country. Did VP do a great job to Madhesi by defying the orders of Nepali dominating Supreme Court? If it’s the fact, then he deserves punishment that he used Nepali language in his career and disrespected Hindi. Whoever envoys expressed this views should read the interim constitution. And they do not have right to dominate our Supreme Court. Just work as per the directives of your government. Tell me one thing, if Jha re-takes oath in Hindi again, is your government promoting him to Chief Minister of any state of your country? Why you people have so much interest in Nepalese politics and Jha’s case? Till now, how much you have invested to promote Hindi? Nepalese constitution treats all regional languages with equal respect, you should better know that. What consequences are you talking about? Is it between the people whom you paid huge money for promoting Hindi and the simple Nepalese people who speak their mother tongues? If it’s so, why you have failed to spread the influence the Hindi language in the southern part of your country? And for you kind information, they really hate people who speak Hindi. It’s the foolish jha who betrayed mother tongue and followed the advice of people like you. Stop fooling Nepalese people living in any part of the country. Malika, Kathmandu, Nepal
