BHADRAPUR: Of those people who went missing in a massive landslide that occurred between Kutidanda of Kolbung and Harkate in Ilam district along the Mechi Highway, bodies of six people have been found by Monday evening.
Among the dead, one is identified as Sarar Pradhan of Fikkal-6. Most of the dead bodies are dismembered and in dreadful condition.
Fourteen people went missing in the landslide that took place at 8:00 pm on Sunday. Status of eight people- seven Indian nationals and a Nepali is still unknown. The Biring River flows through the landslide site and the bodies are feared to be swept away by the river
Dawa Sherpa, 40, Chhoten Bhutiya, 34, Arati Sherpa, 32, Chhiring Kesang Sherpa, 15, Bisworaj Mukhiya, Nagel Bhutiya, 35, and Yangila Sherpa, 7, from Darjeeling, India were among those who went missing in the landslide.
The landslide first swept away a truck, tripper and car, then sand falling 500 metres down enshrouded the vehicles on the way to Pathivara between Kutidanda and Harkate in Ilam district last night, said a local over phone to THT Online.
The landslide hit a car whilst the vehicle was in motion and the driver Ajit Yalamo of Pashupatinagar, Ilam, has also gone missing with the other victims. Four people who were traveling in another car and a helper of the truck were swept away by the landslide.
All the ill-fated vehicles were heading to Ilam from Jhapa when the catastrophe hit them.
One body was found at Ghailadubba-9, in Jhapa today.
The rescue operation for the victims is underway with the help of Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and the locals. However, transport at the site has been reopened from this afternoon.
