DHARAN: In what was supposedly thought to bring some relief to the elderly have actually turned to be an excruciating experience for some 5,000 senior citizens in Dharan.

Elders today stood for more than five hours in queue to get their social security allowance provided by the government.

In its new policy, the government has started to provide elder allowance through bank which in the past used to be disbursed by local bodies.

They used to get their allowance in their homes earlier, but now have to travel all the way to the bank. Still worse, they have to stand in the queue for almost the whole day.

Bhagawat Man Shrestha (79) says, “It’s very difficult to get allowance from the bank,” adding, “Those who are fit they can stay in the queue, but how can an elderly person like me can stand in the line?”

Similarly, 81-year-old Devi Maya also demanded that the allowance should be provided in the house, instead of them going to bank.

Nanda Prasad Dhakal (82) of Dharan-10 said that disabled elders have been affected by the government’s decision to provide allowance through bank just twice a year.
