RAUTAHAT: Cadres of Young Communist League (YCL), a sister-wing of Unified CPN-Maoist, today vandalised and torched Rautahat District Forest Office, demanding action against a corrupt forest officer.
Demanding action against Forest Officer Nandalal Yadav for his alleged involvement in mismanagement of fund and rampant deforestation, hundreds of YCL activists staged a rally chanting slogans against the officer.
The demonstrators later resorted to arson and vandalism at the forest office after security personnel deployed at the office denied them entry. Tension ran high on the office premises after police and demonstrators, trying to break into the forest office, got into a scuffle. Police had to fire 11 rounds in the air to bring the situation under control.
Irate activists set the office gate and the waiting lounge on fire and vandalised a pick-up van . A forest guard was injured in the attack.
Unified CPN-Maoist central member and former lawmaker Devendra Patel said action was a must against the forest officer. “He has done nothing save gobble up money through illegal means and had aided rampant deforestation.” Yadav, however, denied the allegations.
