ITAHARI: Five persons, including a police constable, were injured when police intervened in a torch rally organised by Muslims in Itahari on Wednesday. The rally was organised demanding the formation of Muslim Commission and federalism based on ethnic identity. Muslim leader Taiyab Husen said four agitators and one constable were injured after the police baton charged demonstrators. Meanwhile, Brahmin Society also rallied around the city shouting slogans against ethnicity-based federalism.
Bolt kills student
BENI: Sher Bahadur Paija (13), a student at Khiwang-based Chandra Jyoti Secondary School, died and seven others –– five students, two teachers –– were injured after they were hit by lightning on Tuesday. Critically injured teachers Hom Nath Sharma and Prakash Acharya are receiving treatment at the District Hospital, said police. Students who sustained minor injuries were treated in the village itself.
Accident claims one
BIRATNAGAR: One person died at Morang’s Sanischare-based Manamohan Gandhi Sub-Highway when a bus heading towards west from the highway hit him on Wednesday morning. Identity of the deceased, about 35 years, is yet to be ascertained. He breathed his last while rushing to the hospital in Urlabari. Meanwhile his dead body has been taken to Manglabare Health Post for post-mortem. Pathari Area Police Office have held the bus driver and impounded the vehicle.
KALIKOT: Maharup Pandey (71) of Manma died when he fell off the Majhapani cliff at 11 am on Wednesday. He slipped 150 meters down the cliff when he was checking if the stones ferried by a dozer to build his house are in place or not. He died on the spot, informed SP Narayan Thapa of District Police Office, Kalikot.
