Factories shut‚ workers are suffering

BIRGUNJ: More than five dozen industries in Birgunj-Pathaliya Industrial Corridor area have remained closed owing to various problems, leading to an increase in unemployment.

According to Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), some five dozen small and big industries situated in the industrial area were closed because of labour problem in the last two years. Large factories like Annapurna Textile, Puja Soap and Chemical and Aarati Soap were completely closed within this period, said BCCI Chairman Ashok Tamani.

According to Tamani, production of five dozen industries has already come to a halt, rendering some 20,000 workers jobless. Majority of these factories were shut down due to labour dispute, he said.

The authorities concerned, however, have not taken any initiative to reopen the closed factories and regenerate employment.

Rising unemployment is causing social disturbance and has become headache of security personnel. Some of the jobless workers have turned into criminals, said police.
