Ex-king could lose facilities‚ warns PM

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai today said former king Gyanendra Shah could be stripped of state facilities given to him if the latter tried to play an active political role in present transitional phase.

Prime Minister Bhattarai’s warning follows ex-king Shah’s recent remarks in which he had expressed his dissatisfaction over political parties’ role in the country.

Shah in Parasi on Tuesday had alleged that political parties and their leaders’ performance was not up to the mark and that they lacked farsightedness. The country is in a state of disarray because of leaders’ myopic vision, Shah had said, adding that the people might repose their hopes in monarchy if the trend continued.

Addressing the ninth national convention of Nepal Public Campus Association, Prime Minister Bhattarai said that all the state facilities provided to the former king would be withdrawn if he expressed his desire for an active political role. The prime minister added that Nepali people should put pressure on political leaders in order to overcome the current transitional phase. He also said that budget was essential to save the country from economic crisis therefore the parties should allow the government to avert the looming crisis.
