KATHMANDU: Boys Union Club defeated Samajik Yuva Club 2-1 in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull ‘B’ Division League at the Nepal APF Club grounds on Friday. Sabin KC put Samajik ahead in the 41st minute, while Anil Dhami levelled the scores in the 57th before Aashish Thapa netted the winner for Boys Union in the 90th minute. In another match, Tusal Youth Club and Swoyambhu Club played a goalless draw. On Saturday, Mahabir Studies and Athletics Association will take on Kathmandu Club, Birgunj Youth Academy will play against Satdobato Youth Club and Shree Kumari are up against United Youth Club at the ANFA Academy grounds in Chyasal.

Coach Gupta dies

KATHMANDU: Athletics coach Ashok Gupta died on Thursday night at the age of 48. Gupta, who had been working as an assistant coach at the Parsa District Sports Development Committee under the National Sports Council, died while undergoing treatment of pneumonia at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, said the NSC in a release. Gupta had been serving the NSC since 1994. NSC officials, players and employees at the NSC paid last tribute to Gupta before he was cremated at the Pashupati Aryaghat on Friday.

Innovative win titles

KATHMANDU: Innovative English School claimed double titles of the third Deneb Valleywide Inter-school Basketball Tournament here on Friday. Innovative defeated Mt Glory 43-35 in the senior boys’ section final riding on 11 points from Ajay Kunwar. Bhupendra Roka netted 12 points as Innovative beat defending champions Odyssey 29-22 to win the junior boys’ title. In the girls’ section, Teresa defended the title with a 32-27 victory over Galaxy. Sarita Thapa, who was later declared the Most Valuable Player, scored 17 points for the winners. Sujit Awale and Ramesh Raut of Innovative claimed the MVP awards in senior and junior boys’ sections respectively. Meanwhile, Gyan Niketan thrashed NOBS 21-9 in the staff 3x3 final. Senior Vice-president of Nepal Basketball Association Narendra Thapa and Deneb Principal DR Pandey gave away prizes.

Baba beat Swati

KATHMANDU: Baba Boarding School, Daffodil Public School and Learning Realm International (LRI) School entered the semi-finals of the seventh Baba Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Friday. Baba defeated Swati Sadan 50-30, Daffodil beat Buddha Academy 48-32, and LRI hammered Jagat Mandir 41-14. Teresa have already advanced to the last four. In girls’ section, Daffodil beat Bagmati 25-23, Pennwood outplayed HHCA 26-11, NIMS edge past Valley Public 18-17 and Teresa overcame Baba 25-16 to enter the semis.

RIBS outplay Deneb

KATHMANDU: Rhododendron International Boarding School (RIBS) defeated Deneb 44-24 in the boys’ section match at the 11th Gyan Niketan Inter-school Basketball Tournament here on Friday. In other matches, LRI beat Radiant 41-35, Neric outplayed Gyanodaya 45-27 and defending champions Teresa sneaked past HIMS 43-42. In girls’ section, Teresa defeated New Vision 21-13 and Gyanodaya beat Innovative 26-22. Likewise, hosts Gyan Niketan outplayed Babylon 28-17 in the junior boys’ section match.
