KATHMANDU: Wow — this is a rare word associated with fashion shows in the Capital, but April 23 has forever changed how we view fashion shows here. The ramp, 3D mapping and the music at Signature presents The Himalayan Times TGIF Nepal Fashion Week 2014 in association with Sunsilk and Luxuria, powered by Colors, co-sponsored by Prostyle, Mahindra Reva, Carlsberg and FGV, with Qatar Airways as the official airlines set the benchmark for all other such shows to measure up to. Raju Painter, the man behind the ramp and 3D mapping, should be ready to get all the accolades. Manoj KC for the music doesn’t lag behind. He made the ramp sizzle. His hard work was evident. Every sequence had different music complementing the designs, a pleasant surprise indeed!

Yes, this was some show!

And what could have been a better beginning than the opening with Khushbu Dangol’s Bridal collection? Dangol this time gave an element of surprise. Only choli and lehenga dominated the ramp. There were details on the shoulders, which gave a very modern touch. Her vibrant colour combinations ranged from golden, green, orange, pink, black et cetera making it a bold sequence. The use of georgette, cotton, silk and net gave the clothes the flow and the feel.

Mukta Shrestha of SABAH Nepal was back again with her Dhaka love. As compared to last year, this year it was not that ‘wow’ but you would definitely want to own her pieces. Her Corporate collection makes you want to pick those dresses off the ramp. Who could have thought hemp could look good? A jacket of this material is clearly startling and she has made four buttons on the jacket look chic. From peplum dress to pleats, she definitely gives class to the dull corporate look. A very smart move was the dash of colours on the collars.

Yet another impressive collection was Underwater by Anu Shrestha and Ira Karmacharya of Mandala Silk and Pashmina. From kaftan dresses, harem pants, off-shoulder jumpsuits to rompers, the varieties were interesting, though nothing new. It was a breath of fresh air nonetheless. The colours were soothing and the prints very underwater with fish and seaweeds. Every piece had flawless finishing and their magenta gown takes the cake with sea shell design on the neck. It looked like an oyster opened ready with the pearl.

Other designers too tired their best. The finishing wasn’t so bad, but some designs looked amateurish. One dress that caught one’s fancy was from Prem Deo’s It’s Me Tipas collection — a white short thing with silver grey embellishment.

The first day of Nepal’s ultimate Fashion Week opened with some stunning designs and showstoppers like Malina Joshi, Rojisha Shahi, Jharana Bajracharya and Sadichha Shrestha. With other talented designers ready to parade their creations, one needs to ensure a frow!
