BIRATNAGAR: The Biratnagar airport on Friday was put under heightened security alert following the final preparations of the upcoming Constituent Assembly deadline.

According to Janak Basnet, acting chief of the Nepal Civil Aviation Biratnagar, security has been tightened at the airport due to frequent strikes and demonstrations in the region. He said it would be better to take precaution now rather than regret later.

Police have beefed up security at the airport and surrounding areas following the decision of the district security committee that was taken a few days ago, said Morang DSP Uma Prasad Chaturbedi. She said the security was intensified considering the VIP movement and other safety concerns.

SI Kumar Shrestha, deployed for the security of the airport, said the new security decision has made their job easier by cutting the number of people who otherwise thronged the airport to receive their leaders.

Police have tightened the security check to the common passengers. The passengers have to pass three security check points to reach the airport now, Shrestha said.

Security has been increased considering the CA deadline knocking at the door, CDO Taranath Gautam said.

Aircrafts belonging to different companies have been operating flights to Kathmandu, Tumlingtar, Bhojpur, Thamkharka, Lamidanda, Khanidanda, Rumjatar including other places from the airport.
