Bikash‚ five APF shuttlers make it to semi-finals

Bikash Shrestha of Bhojpur returns to Dipak Bohora of NPC during their men’s singles match of the ninth Krishna Mohan Memorial Badminton Tournament in Kathmandu on Friday.

KATHMANDU: Bikash Shrestha of Bhojpur entered the men’s singles quarter-finals of the ninth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Badminton Tournament here today.

The Nepal No 1 shuttler defeated Deepak Bohora of Nepal Police Club in straight sets of 21-13, 21-16 to make it to the last eight, where he was joined by Nepal APF Club players Indra Mahata, Pankaj Chand, Dipesh Dhami, Bishal Pradhan and Ratnajit Tamang along with the NPC duo of Sajan Krishna Tamrakar and Bishnu Katawal.

Indra defeated his APF clubmate Joseph Adhikari 21-17, 21-10, while Pankaj beat Bijit Thapa 21-8, 21-10. Likewise, Dipesh came from a set down to register a 18-21, 21-11, 21-18 victory over fellow APF shuttler Sudip Sedhain, whereas Sajan beat APF’s Dil Bahadur Dhami 21-18, 21-10. Also, Ratnajit outplayed Rabin Kandangwa Limbu 21-12, 21-10 and Bishnu defeated Suman Limbu of APF 21-9, 21-14.

In women’s singles, four APF players — Samjhana Khaling, Shikshya Shrestha, Sabina Panthi and Nangsal Devi Tamang — made it to the quarter-finals along with Sulochana Bhaktaraj of Ilam, Durga Sharma Bhandari of Kailali and Sara Devi Tamang of TAC. Samjhana defeated Ilu Bhattarai of Morang 21-16, 21-6, while Shikshya hammered Sakila Tamang of Bhojpur 21-3, 21-9 and Sabina thrashed Gyanu Baral of Gulmi 21-7, 21-6. Sulochana laboured to a 14-21, 21-11, 21-19 victory over Shova Gauchan of NPC, whereas other three – Nangsal Devi, Durga and Sara Devi – earned walk over wins to make it to the quarters.

In the Under-17 boys’ singles category, Aashish Thapaliya of NPC defeated Bishwas Nepal of Butwal 21-14, 24-22, while APF’s Dipesh Dhami made it a double delight with a 21-15, 21-15 victory over Prafulla Maharjan of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) to advance to the quarter-finals.

Also entering the last eight were Pranis Thakuri of Jhapa, Sachin Dongol of Lalitpur and Sawan Shrestha of Sunsari. Pranis came from a set down to beat Ashok Jaisi of Kailali 11-21, 21-14, 21-15, while Sachin defeated Dilendra Pun Magar of Baglung 21-19, 21-12 and Sawan laboured to a 18-21, 21-12, 22-20 victory over Nirajan Devkota of KTM.

Likewise in the men’s doubles, the pairs of Dudip Sedhain/Ramesh Sherpa of APF, Lal Bahadur KC/Nirajan Bikram Shahi of Dang, Santosh Singh/Kamal Kumar Shrestha of APF, Umesh Prasad Bhandari/Raju Maharjan of NEA, Rajendra Maharjan/Krishna Tamang of Panchthar, Rajin Khadka/Khem Purja of Baglung, Nabin Babu Shrestha/Mahendra Dhakal of Gorkha, Jitendra Sharma/Mangal Gurung of Kailali, and Khadga Raj Bharati/Santosh Bhattarai of KTM registered victories to enter the second round. Also, Bimal Shrestha/Saroj Maharjan of Lalitpur, Gokul Tamang/Ramesh Shakya of Swoyambhu, Lok Bahadur Thapa/Shambhu Yadav of Bara, and Indra Mahata/ Pankaj Chand of APF earned walk over wins from their opponents in the first round.

In the mixed doubles first round, Sujana and Pankaj of APF defeated Tina Rai and Akash Chhantyal of Lalitpur 21-10, 10-21, 21-15, while Bina Tulachan of Nakhipot and Ganesh Chand of APF beat Kailali’s Durga Sharma and Jitendra Sharma 21-19, 21-11. Also entering the second round were Puja Shrestha/Indra Mahata of APF, Deepak Bohora/Shobha Gauchan of NPC, Kabita Karki/Bimal Shrestha of Lalitpur, and Jal Maya Gurung/Bishnu Katawal of NPC. Likewise, the pair of Sita Dahal and Bishal Pradhan earned a walkover win.

In the fifth APF Open Lawn Tennis Tournament, Manika Rana of Lalitpur defeated Ira M Raut of Kathmandu 6-3, 7-6 to enter the semi-finals. Likewise, Malika Rana thrashed Pritika Manandhar 6-1, 6-1 and Bibhuti Karki outplayed Ani Mathema 6-1, 6-3 in all-Lalitpur matches. Ganga Sharma of Pokhara also made it to the last four with a walk over win.
