NEPALGUNJ: Two persons died and eight were injured when a boiler machine exploded at SM Plywood Industry of Indrapur VDC in Banke today.
The blast occurred at 8 am when labourers were working.
Banke DSP Uday Tamang identified the deceased as an Indian national Baranasi (40) and Sujata Salmani (25). All the injured are factory workers and are undergoing treatment at Nepalgunj Medical College.
According to DSP Uday Tamang, Baranasi, died in the factory, where as Sujata died after the blown parts of the machine hit her in her house. Of the injured, Satrughan Pathak and Jabir Godiya are in critical condition.
SM Plywood located at Nepalgunj-Khajura road section is run by Madhusudan Yogi and Sikandar Halwai. Yogi said the explosion occurred owing to excessive pressure in the machine.
Altogether 125 workers are employed at the factory. It is estimated that the blast damaged property worth Rs 20 million. When the machine exploded, people had mistaken it as a bomb blast. The blast has demolished two houses of workers.
According to Sujata’s husband Sagar, a metal blown from the explosion fell on his house when Sujata was inside. Other family members were away then, Sagar said.
Police and locals extinguished the fire.
