KATHMANDU: Nepal Army remained in the hunt for the semi-finals of the Morgan Cup 12th Men’s and 11th Women’s National Basketball Championships with a 90-31 victory over Far-western Region here at the National Sports Council covered hall today.
It was their first victory in the tournament and their progress in the semi-finals will depend on their final Group ‘A’ match against Premier on Thursday and the latter’s showdown against title contenders Golden Gate. Far-west, meanwhile, were knocked out from the group stage.
Nepal Army took a huge 26-2 lead in the first quarter. The Armymen were tested by Far-west in the second quarter but ultimately prevailed 25-13 that sent them into the second half with a 36-point lead. Far-west couldn’t repeat their second quarter display in the third period as they only scored two points to that of 16 from Nepal Army.
With the match almost over by the end of third quarter, Nepal Army added another 23 points in the final period while conceding only 14. Sita Ram Ghimire scored 20 points for Nepal Army, while Milan Lama top scored for Far-west with 18 points.
In the women’s section, Golden Gate knocked out Kaski from the round-robin trouncing their opponent 63-18. It was Kaski’s third consecutive loss that sent them back home pointless. Golden Gate dominated the entire match after opening with a 15-4 lead in the first quarter. They stretched the lead to 26 points after adding another 20 points when Kaski could score only five.
Golden Gate then virtually sealed the match with a 15-5 lead in the penultimate quarter before sending Kaski out with a 13-4 lead in the final period. Bina Nakarmi posted 10 points for the winners, while Manju Gurung netted nine for Kaski.
