NEW DELHI: A five-member Nepali family set themselves on fire following local civil society and municipality drive to demolish their house, which has been their shelter for the last 35 years.
Police said that the family consisting of three women, poured kerosene on themselves before setting themselves alight in the premises of Rajkot Municipal Corporation.
Two of the five are said to be critical. They were rushed to Rajkot civil hospital right after the incident. However, Janak Kotak mayor of Rajkot Municipatility told local media that the municipality did not have any plan to demolish their house. Kotak also said that the municipality will probe the incident and punish those behind the incident.
According to Damber Rawal, central member of Pravasi Nepali Manch, India, two members of the family Asha and Girish have reportedly died at Rajkot civil hospital while undergoing treatment. Tensions arose and protests flared after the neighbours of the deceased family started staging rallies and protests in front of the municipality.
