DHANKUTA: Hundred-and-six-year-old Bote Rai of Dhankuta Municipality, who is bed- ridden with seasonal flu, wants to experience a flight before he dies.
“I have always wanted to fly but I could never afford it, Rai said, adding, “I want to fly like a bird in the open sky before I die.”
“Though I have lived till this age, I have never flown on a plane before,” he said, urging mediapersons to arrange for a flight instead of health check up and medicine.
A crew of journalists and health workers had approached Rai’s house in coordination with Kirat Aathpahariya Society today.
Rai, who had three wives and a dozen children, has been living at his niece and nephew’s house for the past ten years.
“I could not make my wish come true due to my physical disability and also because my caretakers are too old,” he said, adding, he doesn’t think he will live much longer now.
His caretakers, who are in their mid-70s, said they were too old to look after their maternal uncle and they were also taking care of his handicapped daughter.
“We called the media thinking somebody might want to take care of him after knowing about his plight,” said Nephew Mitra Lal Rai. “It’s been hard taking care of him due to our financial condition. I don’t have money to pay Rs 4,000 to fulfill his last wish,” he lamented. He was also felicitated by the Federation of Indigenous and Ethnic Community Dhankuta chapter a week ago.
