CHITWAN: The Chepang people in Chitwan district have decided to invest the financial assistance they received from Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai in goat farming.
Some have even started goat keeping and it will be conducted with the formation of two groups, said one Manmaya Chepang of Siddhi.
PM Dr Bhattarai provided Rs. 350,000 to the Chepangs here in course of his stay in this remote village under the 'One Night with the People' programme on Thursday.
The government assistance has brought rays of hope among the impoverished Chepang people in the district.
"Now goat keeping will be started with the establishment of a fund," said Dal Bahadur Chepang.
The Chepang community is classified as one of the most marginalised communities in the country. Of the total population of the Chepangs, 85 percent are believed to be in Chitwan.
The Chepang people enormously depend on wild fruits and roots for survival due to lack of access to food stuffs.
"The Chepangs would not have to depend on wild fruits and tubers for food if we could get necessary assistance from the state," said Manmaya.
This new beginning is expected to be a support to uplift the livelihood of the Chepangs in the district.
